Rationale: Participation in sports activities, either for recreational or competitive reasons is growing at an ever increasing rate. Consequently, the incidence of sports injuries and the demand for effective treatment grows accordingly. Many amateur athletes provoke their injuries unnecessarily, thus prolonging the natural healing period. This workshop investigates the critical role of educating the athlete - to minimise disruptive actions. Aim: Using a ‘model’ Case-Study of applied evidence-based-practice (EBP), this course is designed to investigate the entire Sports Injury Management process - from initial injury through to return to full competition. This approach will adopt contemporary research and include; patient assessment, clinical SWOT analysis, clinical reasoning, base-line measurements, ongoing assessment, patient education, evaluation-based progression criteria, all embraced in the scientific principles underlying phases of tissue healing. |
Suitability: All forms of therapists / practitioners involved in the treatment of sports injuries (from amateur to elite level), especially those seeking an EBP approach. We use a simple, systematic and logical approach to treatment of injury and the delivery of our course content. |

Bikefit Screening of Competitive Cyclists (for therapists)

Rationale: As the popularity of cycling continues to grow so does the concept of bike-fitting. However, pre-bikefit musculoskeletal screening is an area often neglected, undervalued, or misunderstood by many cyclists, bike-fitters and therapists alike. During repetitive pedal revolutions, the smallest amount of malalignment, whether anatomic or mechanically related, can lead to injury and impaired performance (power loss). Although limited research exists to support the efficacy of screening, we believe our approach is clinically sound, somewhat unique; furthermore supported by our own comprehensive literature review, research now found on the Specialized website and published articles. Aim: Our screening protocol helps detect 'key' musculoskeletal deficits likely to disturb pedalling symmetry. Thereafter, appropriate intervention can potentially contribute towards performance enhancement and/or injury prevention. Ideally, findings should be used to compliment and optimise the Bikefit process, especially in conjunction with personalised rehab plans to restore musculoskeletal deficits. Club cyclists and older riders are the most likely beneficiaries of musculoskeletal screening. |

Suitability: The day workshop is specific, primarily directed towards clinicians, physios and therapists that work with cyclists / triathletes. Whereas, our evening workshops are generally aimed at coaches, bikefitters and cyclists. Although, physiotherapists, osteopaths and other therapists often attend. |

Rationale: Many soft tissue injuries / musculoskeletal conditions cannot be addressed effectively by any single discipline in isolation. Consequently, proactive clinicians now acknowledge that clinical outcomes can be better achieved through a multidisciplinary / multifactorial approach. Aim: To promote safe, effective, appropriate evidence-based-practice (EBP) Electrotherapy to complement and enhance existing Manual Therapy techniques throughout the healing process. Thereby, enabling practitioners to deliver a multi-factorial approach aimed at optimising clinical outcomes and patient care. Content includes; electrotherapy objectives, health, safety, hygiene (hazard control), legal requirements; physiological, psychological and biomechanical effects; clinical awareness, tissue healing, strategy for effective EBP application of electrotherapy with respect to manual therapy techniques aimed to optimise clinical outcomes. Suitability: All forms of therapists / practitioners wishing to broaden their treatment base to include Electrotherapy as an additional clinical tool to complement and enhance existing manual therapy skills. Alternatively, the content is highly suitable for those who may simply wish to update their awareness and knowledge in EBP electrotherapy. Furthermore, owners of electrotherapy equipment may have the opportunity to seek guidance in operational aspects with respect to their own equipment – by prior arrangement. |
